Baby's first summer is a milestone season — the first beach trip, the first splash pad, the first time they notice sunlight on their face. It's also the season that requires the most preparation from a safety and comfort standpoint, because heat and sun affect babies very differently than adults.
Here's everything you need to know to prepare your baby for summer — from what they wear to how you protect their skin to what actually belongs in your summer bag.
Understanding How Heat Affects Babies
Before the gear and the outfits, the most important thing to understand is why summer is different for babies:
- Limited sweating ability: Newborns and young infants can't sweat efficiently, which is their primary mechanism for cooling down. This makes them significantly more vulnerable to overheating than older children or adults.
- Faster dehydration: Babies have a higher surface-area-to-body-mass ratio, meaning they lose fluid faster through skin and breathing in hot, dry air.
- No communication: A baby can't tell you they're too hot. You have to read the signs — flushed cheeks, sweaty neck, rapid breathing, unusual fussiness.
None of this means summer is dangerous — it just means preparation matters.
The Summer Clothing Essentials
Keep it simple, keep it breathable. Here's what every summer baby wardrobe needs:
- Short-sleeve organic cotton bodysuits — The daily uniform. Have at least 6–8. Worn alone on warm days, layered under light pants or rompers when you need a bit more coverage.
- Lightweight rompers — One-piece, snap-crotch, breathable fabric. A romper in a summer print (fruit, floral, or bold stripe) is a complete outfit that works from morning to evening.
- A linen-blend piece or two — Linen is one of the most breathable fabrics available. A linen romper or set is ideal for the hottest days.
- 0.5 TOG sleep sack — The warm-weather sleep essential. Replaces loose blankets safely and keeps baby at the right temperature through warm nights.
- Wide-brim sun hat — Non-negotiable for any time outdoors. Cotton, with a chin strap that actually stays put.
- Summer shoes: Breathable first sneakers for walking babies, soft cotton sandals for younger ones. Avoid thick rubber soles that trap heat.
Sun Safety: The Rules That Actually Matter
Under 6 Months
The AAP advises keeping babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight entirely. This isn't a guideline to bend — newborn skin is exceptionally vulnerable, and sunscreen is not recommended for this age group. Instead:
- Use a stroller canopy and UV-blocking cover
- Dress in lightweight long-sleeve coverage if outdoors
- Stay in shade and time outdoor trips for early morning or late afternoon
6 Months and Older
- Apply SPF 50+ mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) 15 minutes before going outside
- Reapply every 2 hours and after any water exposure
- Cover as much skin as reasonably possible with lightweight UPF-rated clothing
- Wide-brim hat to protect face, ears, and neck
- Avoid peak UV hours: 10am–4pm
Hydration in Summer Heat
- Under 6 months: Breast milk or formula only — no water. Feed more frequently in heat to compensate for fluid loss.
- 6 months and older: Small amounts of water can be introduced alongside breast milk or formula. Offer more frequently in hot weather.
- Signs of dehydration: Fewer wet diapers than usual, dark-colored urine, dry mouth, sunken soft spot on the fontanelle. Seek medical attention promptly if these appear.
The Summer Outing Bag: What to Always Carry
- 2 outfit changes (summer + heat = more blowouts and sweat)
- Wide-brim hat + backup hat
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ (6 months+)
- Muslin swaddle (shade, AC layer, impromptu changing pad)
- Extra feeds or snacks
- Water for you
- Small portable fan clip for the stroller
- Cooling mist spray for particularly hot days
Summer Sleep: Keeping Baby Cool at Night
- Ideal nursery temperature: 68–72°F (20–22°C). Use AC or a fan (not directed at baby) to maintain this.
- In a room at 72–75°F: short-sleeve bodysuit + 0.5 TOG sleep sack
- In a room above 75°F: just a diaper or diaper + very light muslin sleep sack
- No loose blankets, ever — regardless of temperature
- Skip the hat at night — babies release heat through their heads. Covering it disrupts their natural cooling.
First Summer Milestones: What to Expect
- First swim: Swim diaper + UPF rash guard + hat. Introduce water gradually and calmly.
- First beach trip: Arrive early, set up in shade, leave by 10am or arrive after 4pm. Sand + sun + heat is a triple challenge for very young babies.
- First splash pad: A great summer option for older babies … but bring a full outfit change because they will be completely soaked.
- First ice cream: Not before 12 months for whole milk-based options. Baby-friendly frozen fruit puree works as an earlier alternative on hot days.
